Conflict Goals (Li & Vanderbilt, 2026)

These measures were extended from Keck and Samp’s (2007) single-item measures of four conflict goals and were used in this paper. I typically use a 6-point Likert scale (Strongly disagree … Strongly agree) with these statements. The goals are instrumental (task) goal, relational goal, self identity goal, and partner identity goal. Original items from Keck and Samp are highlighted. Note that “partner” was replaced with “the other person” as the sample recalled conflict in different relationship types.

In the most recent argument episode, it was important for me to…

Instrumental Goal

Convince the other person of my position

Achieve the outcome I wanted

Gain the upper hand in the argument

Have my point of view validated

Win the argument

Prove that I was right

Defend my own stance

Self Identity Goal

Restore or maintain my sense of self

Be true to myself and my values

Preserve my integrity

Protect my identity

Stay consistent with who I am

Behave as my usual self

Resist challenges to my character

Partner Identity Goal

Support the other person

Protect the other person’s feelings

Preserve the other person’s identity

Show my empathy and care

Relational Goal

Maintain our relationship

Understand each other

Stay connected with each other

Minimize damage to our relationship
